About Ardnamurchan National Scenic Area

Ardnamurchan National Scenic Area is located on the Ardnamurchan Peninsula in the Lochaber area of the Scottish Highlands. Spanning approximately 60 square miles, this protected region includes a striking combination of coastal cliffs, sandy beaches, mountainous terrain, and dense native woodlands. It is the westernmost point of mainland Britain and features dramatic geological formations that are part of the Ardnamurchan Igneous Complex, renowned for its ancient volcanic origins. The area supports a diverse ecosystem with populations of red deer, otters, golden eagles, and rare wildflowers, making it an excellent destination for wildlife enthusiasts and naturalists. Historically, Ardnamurchan has a rich Gaelic heritage and contains ancient archaeological sites such as Iron Age forts and cairns. Outdoor recreation opportunities range from hiking and mountain biking on rugged trails to kayaking along the sheltered sea lochs and beaches. Visitors can explore notable landmarks including the Ardnamurchan Lighthouse, one of the finest in Scotland, and the picturesque village of Kilchoan. The relative remoteness of the area, combined with low visitor numbers, allows for tranquil experiences in nature with exceptional scenic vistas across the Atlantic Ocean. As a designated National Scenic Area, Ardnamurchan focuses on conserving its distinctive landscape character and biodiversity while encouraging sustainable tourism.
